Ask the yayas

yayamamas Q&A!

Have a question about Motherhood? Toddler behavior? Teen attitudes? Co-parenting? Play groups? Pregnancy? Breastfeeding? Preschool? Ask the yayas! We’ll share compassionate, loving, educated ideas and answers to your questions.

It’s like sending a letter to Dear Abby, but instead of just one person giving their perspective, you’ll get a variety of answers from different moms. Because that’s how life really is… when it comes to parenting, there is no one “right” answer.

Date Night

4 / 21 / 184 / 12 / 18

Dear yayas, My husband and I are stuck in a dating rut. We haven’t gone out on a date for at least 6 months. We’re tired all the time and low on funds, so we can’t do anything too over the top. I want to “spice things up,” but honestly don’t remember how to do… Read More

How Many Kids

4 / 14 / 184 / 12 / 18

Dear yayas, How do you know when you’re “done” having kids? We have two children–one boy and one girl–and I just don’t feel like I’m done having babies. My partner is on the fence. We know there’s a lot of factors to consider, but does this feeling of wanting more ever go away?  – Pondering… Read More

Parenting With A Partner

4 / 7 / 184 / 10 / 18

Dear yayas, I’m starting to feel like my husband and I aren’t on the same page when it comes to parenting. We have a 6 month old and a 3 year old and lately there have just been so many moments where I’m trying to stay on schedule and he just, I don’t know, doesn’t… Read More

3 Year Old Behavior

3 / 31 / 183 / 4 / 18

Dear yayas, My 3.5 year-old daughter is obsessed with the word “mean.” She calls herself mean, other kids mean, objects mean, strangers mean, her dad mean. We don’t use the word a lot and I model alternative ways to describe people/things. It can be funny at times, but it’s almost an obsession! It’s a “stage”… Read More

Two – Three Year Olds

3 / 24 / 183 / 4 / 18

Dear yayas, My 2 (almost 3) year old is driving me bonkers! I heard 3 is worse than 2…is this true? I’m going to need some tips (and a drink!) if we’re going to get through this challenging stage! Any pointers? – Desperate in Delaware Hi Desperate in Delaware, Each age and stage comes with… Read More

Breastfeeding in Public

3 / 17 / 183 / 3 / 18

Dear yayas, I’ve been nursing my baby for about six months now, at home and in public. I didn’t think much of it until the other day at the store when I looked up from nursing to see an older couple scowling at me. I’m not an idiot, it was pretty obvious they were disgusted… Read More

Dear yayas, I have been SO nauseous for the entire first half of my pregnancy! I feel like there is no end in sight to the nausea. I don’t feel like myself and am not really enjoying my pregnancy the way I thought I would. Any suggestions? – Miserable Mama Oh, Miserable Mama, I am… Read More

Breastfeeding During Pregnancy

Dear yayas, I’m 6 weeks pregnant with baby #2. My first is only 11 months old and still nursing (with no end in sight!). Preschool Behavior

2 / 24 / 183 / 4 / 18

Dear yayas, How do we limit bad behaviors our preschooler picks up from school?
We have one child, an almost four-year-old daughter who is in preschool a few days a week. Lately, she’s been coming home from school and yelling “stop it!” in an ugly tone to us (and even at inanimate objects) in various situations… Read More

Here’s an unpopular opinion that I stand by. And Here’s an unpopular opinion that I stand by. And if we have to make it “popular” for us to maintain our freedom to homeschool our children, so be it. Who’s ready to make homeschool “popular” and “the norm?” 🙋🏻‍♀️

March 16, 2023…A year ago today, Chris and I pac March 16, 2023…A year ago today, Chris and I packed up our 3 little girls, our 3 month old son, and 8 suitcases & flew away from our beloved home on Maui. Chris was remodeling our home until the moment we had to leave. I took a picture of him standing in the unfinished shower and then said, “You have to stop. It’s time to go.” He changed out of his work clothes, threw them in the dumpster, put the last of his tools into our container that was picked up later that day, and we drove to the airport. I remember that drive. It was so surreal. We took the road I’d taken thousands of times. The finality of it all was there but blurry. I had to be strong for my kids and our friends who were there to tell us “a hui hou.”

I purposefully booked our final flight with Hawaiian Airlines, hoping for one last piece of aloha. Instead, we were treated like crap. I was harassed by flight attendants for drinking too much water and not wearing my mask 100% of the time. They chastised me for not being able to pull my mask up immediately when I was nursing my 3 month old son...(continued in the comments).
Hold on to your kids. Sending them away is the rad Hold on to your kids. Sending them away is the radical idea. Keeping them at home to be loved and guided by me is compassionate. It feels right. I know it’s right. Breaking apart my family for hours that quickly turn into years “because that’s just what people do these days” has never sat well with my spirit. So I do what is best for me, my children, and my family I do what promotes connect, love, and a genuine love of learning. I homeschool. If you want to homeschool, I want to help.

Learning Self-Sufficiency & Homesteading Science w Learning Self-Sufficiency & Homesteading Science with Kody Hanner 👩🏻‍🌾

“The modern homestead movement is 100% a state of mind. It’s the strive for self-sufficiency.” -Kody Hanner, EM Episode 143

My friend Kody Hanner wrote a homestead curriculum that my family adores. It’s being used by homeschoolers, schools, and I know some adults who could benefit from the huge amount of information in her homestead curriculum. Kody joins us today to talk about her curriculum, how it came to be, the modern homestead movement, life-long learning, parenting, and so much more.

Kody has generously offered a discount code for listeners of Elevating Motherhood. Use the code LORIBETH at your @homestead_education checkout 🙂

Kody’s Bio: Kody is a wife of a veteran, mother of 6, homesteader, and homeschooler, that has devoted her life to agriculture and embracing rural living. She created and authored the Homestead Education series of homeschool curricula that includes homestead science. She is the host of The Homestead Education Podcast, which is rapidly growing in popularity where she chats candidly about homesteading, homeschooling, and personal growth.

Kody is incredibly capable and humbly inspiring. Give the episode a listen & give her a follow 😘
This deserves a permanent place on my feed. 💜 W This deserves a permanent place on my feed. 💜 When I take the time to think about what a “good day” in my house looks like vs. a hectic day, this is the difference. If I pray, nourish my family, and pray about what to do next, the stress of artificial timelines created by me fades away and I’m able to be more present (and less yell-y). When I try to lean on my own limited strength and an overly full calendar, things fall apart. I’m in a season of multiple nightly wakeups. We live in a world of consumerism and overwhelm. Given those factors, I can’t rely on my strength alone.

If you’re having a hectic day, try praying. If you’ve never prayed before during a hectic day, I encourage you to give it a try. “Lord, give me strength. I cannot do it alone. Help me in this moment. Show me the next right thing.”
