Playdate Troubles

Dear yayas, I have an ongoing problem. I have 3 kids. My brother has 1. My oldest and his are 6 months apart. We get together quite often because we are family. But when we go over to his house, his kid is super rude to my kids. Honestly the kid acts entitled and is… Read More

Lori Beth Auldridge is a mama bear to three little girls. She and her husband Chris run a renovation business in upcountry Maui. Lori Beth dreams up the designs and Chris makes all those dreams come to life. Her days are filled with her favorite things... coffee, writing, homeschooling, babywearing, audiobooks, binge reading parenting articles, miniature goats, fancy chickens, exploring Maui, moms groups, and more coffee. Yayamamas is her way of spreading aloha and using her B.A., M.A., & M.F.A. degrees to put more good into the world.

Here’s an unpopular opinion that I stand by. And Here’s an unpopular opinion that I stand by. And if we have to make it “popular” for us to maintain our freedom to homeschool our children, so be it. Who’s ready to make homeschool “popular” and “the norm?” 🙋🏻‍♀️

March 16, 2023…A year ago today, Chris and I pac March 16, 2023…A year ago today, Chris and I packed up our 3 little girls, our 3 month old son, and 8 suitcases & flew away from our beloved home on Maui. Chris was remodeling our home until the moment we had to leave. I took a picture of him standing in the unfinished shower and then said, “You have to stop. It’s time to go.” He changed out of his work clothes, threw them in the dumpster, put the last of his tools into our container that was picked up later that day, and we drove to the airport. I remember that drive. It was so surreal. We took the road I’d taken thousands of times. The finality of it all was there but blurry. I had to be strong for my kids and our friends who were there to tell us “a hui hou.”

I purposefully booked our final flight with Hawaiian Airlines, hoping for one last piece of aloha. Instead, we were treated like crap. I was harassed by flight attendants for drinking too much water and not wearing my mask 100% of the time. They chastised me for not being able to pull my mask up immediately when I was nursing my 3 month old son...(continued in the comments).
Hold on to your kids. Sending them away is the rad Hold on to your kids. Sending them away is the radical idea. Keeping them at home to be loved and guided by me is compassionate. It feels right. I know it’s right. Breaking apart my family for hours that quickly turn into years “because that’s just what people do these days” has never sat well with my spirit. So I do what is best for me, my children, and my family I do what promotes connect, love, and a genuine love of learning. I homeschool. If you want to homeschool, I want to help.

Learning Self-Sufficiency & Homesteading Science w Learning Self-Sufficiency & Homesteading Science with Kody Hanner 👩🏻‍🌾

“The modern homestead movement is 100% a state of mind. It’s the strive for self-sufficiency.” -Kody Hanner, EM Episode 143

My friend Kody Hanner wrote a homestead curriculum that my family adores. It’s being used by homeschoolers, schools, and I know some adults who could benefit from the huge amount of information in her homestead curriculum. Kody joins us today to talk about her curriculum, how it came to be, the modern homestead movement, life-long learning, parenting, and so much more.

Kody has generously offered a discount code for listeners of Elevating Motherhood. Use the code LORIBETH at your @homestead_education checkout 🙂

Kody’s Bio: Kody is a wife of a veteran, mother of 6, homesteader, and homeschooler, that has devoted her life to agriculture and embracing rural living. She created and authored the Homestead Education series of homeschool curricula that includes homestead science. She is the host of The Homestead Education Podcast, which is rapidly growing in popularity where she chats candidly about homesteading, homeschooling, and personal growth.

Kody is incredibly capable and humbly inspiring. Give the episode a listen & give her a follow 😘
This deserves a permanent place on my feed. 💜 W This deserves a permanent place on my feed. 💜 When I take the time to think about what a “good day” in my house looks like vs. a hectic day, this is the difference. If I pray, nourish my family, and pray about what to do next, the stress of artificial timelines created by me fades away and I’m able to be more present (and less yell-y). When I try to lean on my own limited strength and an overly full calendar, things fall apart. I’m in a season of multiple nightly wakeups. We live in a world of consumerism and overwhelm. Given those factors, I can’t rely on my strength alone.

If you’re having a hectic day, try praying. If you’ve never prayed before during a hectic day, I encourage you to give it a try. “Lord, give me strength. I cannot do it alone. Help me in this moment. Show me the next right thing.”
“I know I should probably be homeschooling my ki “I know I should probably be homeschooling my kid, but I don’t feel confident in my ability to teach.”

I hear this all the time. Parents feeling like they aren’t capable of teaching their children (even though they already are day in and day out 😘). But I get it. If you don’t know about something—the how, the why, the when, the where—it’s really hard to feel confident about taking on that “thing.”

For a lot of parents these days, that “thing” is homeschool. Parents can see that their child would benefit from being pulled out of school and homeschooled instead. But if you don’t know how to homeschool or where to start, it’s REALLY HARD to make the huge decision to homeschool.

Can you do it? Could you do it well? Will you have the patience? Do I have the time? Let me help you answer those questions. Let me show you what modern homeschool can actually look like. Yes, you can homeschool. Yes, you could do it well. Yes, you do have the patience. Yes, you do have the time.

Don’t let your temporary lack of confidence (from lack of experience and information) get in the way of doing what you know is best for your family. 💙 If “what is best” feels like homeschooling, I can help. Go to homeschoolexplained.com and check out the details of the course. Let me help you get started with confidence. 🥰

I felt like I needed to check in with one of my da I felt like I needed to check in with one of my daughters to see where she was in her reading + find out what her current interests are & what she’d like to study more. So we packed up some curriculum and went on a one-on-one adventure to a (new to us) coffee shop for lunch. It was awesome! We talked. We read. We brainstormed. We dreamed. We reconnected. I can’t recommend a change of scenery or some one-on-one time enough! When we homeschool, we’re not trying to recreate school at home. We’re thinking beyond the confines of a brick and mortar education. Beyond schedules and bells. Beyond test results. We’re fueling curiosity and independence. We’re equipping our whole child and strengthening our relationships. We’re using the freedom we have—what a gift!—to individualize our child’s education. We’re keeping our child whole and healthy.  And we can do that without the input and restrictions of others. Take your child on a day date during “school hours” (whatever those are 🤷🏻‍♀️). Ask them what they want to learn. Lay out a feast for them with stories and resources. Bring your excitement to the table. And if a big ol’ latte at a coffee shop helps you do that…I say get in the car and find your new special hang out spot. The goal is not to fill out forms and worry and document every detail of your child’s learning. The goal is connection in a disconnected world. Opt out of mainstream education philosophies and opt in to deeper meaning and connection. #homeschoolforthewin  Homestead Curriculum pictured: link in my bio

I’m sorting through some of our renovation photos for the new Auldridge Renovations website 🥰 What a wild ride down memory lane!
