I struggle with schedules. Mostly because I want to be free to go outside when the weather is perfect. Or, like today, I need to feel free to drop everything, make a coffee, & sit by the window when the sun suddenly shows itself after a week of gray winter days.

Today my kids and I did drop everything and just sit in the sun, letting it warm our faces through the window. I nursed my toddler to sleep, sipped my coffee, & listened to my older girls talk, the sun shining on us the whole time. It was glorious, very needed, & not on a schedule.

My Friday afternoon is the complete opposite of my Monday morning. Monday felt gray and suffocating. I feel like I lived a whole month in one week. And because of that, I sat in the sun today with no mom guilt. No homeschool guilt. No scheduling guilt. I needed this pause. I needed the sun.

I need moments of rest when I need them and not when my schedule says I need them. I need to feel connected to my kids when we need to reconnect, not when my schedule tells me it’s time for our connection time. And I need these things without the guilt.

Do you know what comes to mind in these moments of genuine rest? Gratitude. I’m so grateful for two things: God and my husband. I didn’t feel relieved that I finally got to sit down in the sun (although that’s nice)—instead of relief, I felt deeply loved and cared for. My husband works hard so we have the freedom to seek the sun or reconnction when we need it. I saw clearly God’s role in this moment, too. Once you know God, it’s easy to see and feel how basking in his love feels a lot like basking in the sun on a winter day. God is good all the time. ☀️

This is so true. And winter is showing me that full stop. We are in the house together (even more than we usually are on warm weather homeschool days) and my kids light up most when I spend time with them and look into their eyes. They don’t light up when I post on IG. They don’t light up when I get lost in the scroll.

I know it sounds simple and obvious, but in our consuming culture filled with phones, screens, and social media time sucks, it’s more important than ever that we look our children in the eye, make time to be with them, and make sure they see us without our phones and a zoned out look.

This message is a reminder for me more than anyone, but if it serves you, too—great: Put your phone down. Zone in. Write down “uninterrupted time with your kids” on the schedule FIRST. Be on social media only to serve or to consume what encourages me to continue to grow as a mother, wife, and friend. Surround myself with people and messages that deepen my faith, not ones that make me question it. Give your children time and you’ll give them love. 💗

Homeschooling often means WE are learning as moms.

Homeschooling often means WE are learning as moms. We are studying just as much if not more than our kids 🥰

We don’t have to come at homeschooling from the perspective that we “should know it all already.” We don’t have to put on some sort of expert teacher hat. In fact, I highly recommend you don’t. 🫣

We can come to homeschool humbly as lifelong learners. 💙 We can fight the fact that we have to learn and grow, too…or we can embrace the challenge and learn with ease. The mindset choice is ours. 🥰

This is our first audiobook of 2024 and we are alm

This is our first audiobook of 2024 and we are almost done with it. 🙌🏼 We are having a sick day (half of us are down for the count), so…audiobook for the win.

This Beverly Cleary book was in the top 50 for kids on the Everand app. truthfully, I’m not sure why 😂

As a person who holds two masters degrees in children’s literature, this book is not my favorite. I appreciate the POV, but 🤷🏻‍♀️ As an experienced parent who has a ton of animals, the new parents with a cat drama is extra funny to me 😂 As a crunchy mom of 4 homeschoolers, let me just say I have a problem with all of the sibling rivalry (so much “stupid” talk) and the automatic formula and crib for the baby. More and more I’m starting to think I need to write a book that reflects the life of crunchy kids 😂

But even though this book isn’t anyone’s favorite, we are enjoying our time together. It really isn’t about whether we like books or not, it’s about togetherness. It’s about analyzing literature together. And having an experience together… Which is something that happens with reading aloud or listening to audiobooks.🥰

I bought a family gift for the RV for Christmas 😍 I can hardly wait to put it up and hit the road in 2024! ☺️🙌🏼

Seriously. I can’t tell you how many times people have shared their “deep thoughts” (cough, sarcasm, cough) about homeschool and their many “concerns” they have about homeschooled kids…aaaaaaand they know absolutely nothing about modern homeschool. 🥴 Many times they don’t know any homeschool kids. 🤔 They truly don’t realize how uneducated (cough, ironically, cough cough) they sound. 🙃
