Keep At It!

Summer isn’t over yet, even if our challenge is drawing to a close. If you didn’t squeeze in everyone’s idea, there is still time. Remember, it doesn’t have to be elaborate. It can be as simple as a popsicle on the back porch.

If you already met your goals, how would you and your family feel about keeping the fun going? What if once a month or even every week you focused on Family Fun as a way to reconnect and keep the spirit of summer alive all year? Think about it. Talk about it. Write about it. You’ve been talking openly with your family about your Family Fun goals all month long…keep the conversation going! Decide on new Family Fun goals and write them down.

Reflection

I want you to be honest with yourself. How much of this month’s fun was about “stuff” and how much of it was just about being together as a family? What were your most fun moments? When did you feel most connected and plugged into your kids?

Your Own Backyard

What could you do that’s fun right in your own yard? On your own street? Right at home? Write about it. Get creative (poetic even) with the details. As the month draws to a close, this will act as a nice reminder that you don’t have to venture far to be present with your children, giving them your full attention, as you discover (or rediscover) your own backyard just for fun.

Caption Day

Sit down together (or solo) and write the captions from the photos you chose yesterday. Include dates, names, locations, details, quotes. (Check out the awesome summer quotes on the yayamamas IG and FB pages for ideas!) Spend some time writing short snippets or stories or gather the ones you’ve already written. It’s a great way to slow down and reminisce; for everyone to really appreciate all you’ve done.

Picture Day

Sit down together as a family and choose which photos you want to include in your Summer Story. Which ones are you going to print out? This could take 5 minutes or an hour. Enjoy that time together.

Then write about that moment you had together choosing the photos: how long it took, which memories your kids or partner got most excited about, how it felt to sit together and reminisce about your summer memories.

Family Reflection Day

Bring your family in on it! Repeat yesterday’s prompts, but with your family. Write from their point of view and what they remember.

I learned from Dr. Donna Lane that : “According I learned from Dr. Donna Lane that : “According to a 2016 study published by Whitney and Peterson, one in six kids between 6 and 17 have a mental health diagnosis. This was, of course, pre-COVID. A recent study in Psychiatric Times indicated that isolation and loneliness increase the risk of depression up to 9 years after the event, and the duration vs. the intensity of loneliness was more likely to cause long-term mental health issues.”

No wonder our children’s mental health is one of the main concerns of many moms I talk with. But there are so many stigmas around mental health and fear of diagnosis that it can be difficult to navigate the world of mental health for ourselves, let alone our children.

We’ve talked about adult mental health topics here on the podcast before, but today we’re turning our focus to children’s mental health.

Dr. Donna’s messages are for moms of younger kids as well as moms of teens who are concerned about the isolation from peer relationships and how that’s affecting their kids, signs to look for, and how to reach out. There are some thorough and helpful links to resources in the show notes.

Donna’s Bio: @thedoctorslane Drs. David and Donna Lane are a husband-wife counseling duo who specialize in trauma, grief, and loss as well as family relationships. While qualified by education, their life experience shapes much of their current-day work, as they have experienced first-hand the horrific death of their own son, who had a neurological disorder throughout his 17 years on earth. The Lanes are professors, counselors, consultants and award-winning authors; their research and writing on trauma and grief has been used extensively throughout the world in the aftermath of tragedies including the Sandy Hook shootings, Haiti earthquakes, Rwandan genocide and others. The Lanes live in the Atlanta area and have been married to each other for more than 40 years.

Tune in...and let’s talk about it more over on Patreon 😘

It doesn’t matter what my homeschool planner says...it’s what they’re passionate about & motivated to learn. Friday it was architecture. Today it’s veterinary medicine.

My job is to kindle the flame of their hearts & imaginations, not check boxes 😘

All of life is learning. What will these pivots turn into, I wonder 😍

I’ve been researching how & where to gather support for moms OFF of social media and Patreon is it! 🙌

It’s an ad-free, no distraction space where we can gather, learn together, dive deep into topics, and just be with other moms in a positive, supportive place without all the nonsense! Like an online moms group 🥰

I’ll be hosting a monthly class there as well! 💜 A virtual “moms night in” once a month where we can gather and learn fun skills together and connect during this odd time of being apart. April’s class is “Elevating Your Everyday Cooking with Kris Dovbniak” on Friday, April 23rd 👩🏻‍🍳 It’s incredible!

This Patreon space is a collaboration of all my favorite things…hanging out with moms, having deep, meaningful conversations, and learning new skills with my friends! 💗
